Classes, Twitter, and Agents! Oh my!

How is it December already? More importantly, what happened to November?

I’ve been forcing myself into the role of being a respectable author, which means taking classes to improve my querying skills (which I hate, just so we’re clear). Nothing makes me more uneasy than selling myself to complete strangers. I’ve spent the last month preparing to query literary agents. They’re hard to find and they all want different things. How do I cope with my anxiety, you ask? I stress-eat and forget to sleep. That’s healthy, right?

Okay, maybe it’s not.

To top it off, today was the first #PitMad I’ve participated in. Four times a year, you can pitch to agents, publishers, and editors who are scrolling through Twitter to find new clients. You get three tweets for the entire day. Three.

No pressure.

If they like your tweet, you submit to them and go to the top of their slush pile. Then you wait. This is by far the worst part. If they respond immediately it’s a no. If they never respond…also a no.

So while I wait 2-12 weeks for various rejections, please know I miss you all like mad, hope you have a lovely December, and I’m writing as often as I can.

You should follow my September Roberts blog, friend me on Facebook, and follow me on Twitter and I’ll follow you back! I’ve been told by an editor friend of mine that I need to be active in social media, and that’s what I plan to do. See you out there!

Wishing you the best! Even as much as I hate those things…#Anything – Social media (unfortunately) is the best way to draw attention these days. If you learn just one thing from your classes, then they’re worth it! Never been one to believe a class can teach you how to write, but it may teach you how to market what you’ve written! That’s what you want, right? 🙂 Now if we could talk you into some healthy habits before you pass out… OH! Remember, there will be a picture on the dust cover, so don’t eat too much and try to get some sleep because bags under the eyes (especially after a certain age) are hard as hell to get rid of! (I refer to mine as Louis Vuittons) Seriously, don’t harm yourself throughout all this! We’ll miss you and await your return, but want a happy, healthy return! I can’t wait to see your name in print in a bookstore… I love seeing it on the ‘Net! You know I’m pulling & wishing for you, girl! All the best to you, my friend! 🙂

    • You made me cackle. Seriously. I’m still laughing. I’ll try to eat well and get some sleep. I think I should listen to you. You wouldn’t lie to me, would you? Didn’t think so! An agent liked one of my pitmad tweets! Which was an invitation to query her. I promptly heard back with a message that asked me to double my MS word count. Shit. Double. So now I’m working on that. It’s going to take a while, but it might be worth it. Right?

That’s what the class was, all about how to query and market. It sucks that I have to rely on social media so much, but it’s where this world is headed, so I’m going with the flow. 🙂 Now off to add another 40,000 words to my book. 🙂

    • Oh, and thanks for all your support. Always. And making me laugh. You’re the best!
