Chapter 4

Eric’s POV

Eric stood in her room, dazed and confused. “What just happened?” he asked.

He had just been used for sex.

“That’s what I do.” Always the user, never the used. Not until now.

She had left something behind when she departed: a hunger for more. What began as a quicky could’ve easily become an all night fuck-fest. But that didn’t happen, he reminded himself. She left. She pushed him away, got dressed, and walked out of the room.

Eric hated him for coming up with the idea, which turned out to be more profitable than anyone had hoped. Of course the queen would see a large portion of that, but still, Bill had done very little work for a huge payoff. Eric hated him for other reasons as well, and the database wasn’t helping.

Bill had offered ten percent of his profit to Pam if she would help him, so she did. She wore a silly costume – as per Bill’s request – and even smiled at customers.

“Have you met anyone new?” Eric asked Pam while Bill discussed German vampires at length with a customer.

Pam sat slumped in a chair. “No.” She narrowed her eyes and inhaled. “But it seems as though you have.”

He smiled. He hadn’t wanted to shower because Sookie’s scent clung to his skin. She had made a big deal about secrecy, but he didn’t give a shit if Pam knew.

“Who is she?” Pam asked, sliding off her chair and getting closer to him for a better sniff.

“Sookie Stackhouse.”

“The one Bobby was blathering about?” Pam rolled her eyes.

“I can see why he would be so shaken by her. She’s unnerving.”

She frowned. “What does that mean?”

“She knows what she wants and she knows how to get it. It’s not a quality you find in humans very often.” He watched and waited for the rest of the night, but didn’t see Sookie again. When he got inside his coffin just before sunrise, he held the remnants of her panties against his skin, and when he woke that night, her name was on his lips. He needed to find her. Now.

After a quick shower, he made his way up to the queen’s suite and knocked on the door. Andre answered and ushered him inside. The room bustled with vampires and demons, but only one human: Sookie. He smiled, but she didn’t look at him.

“Just the man I wanted to see!” Sophie-Anne said, getting up from her perch to greet him.

“Why is that?” Eric asked, eying Sookie nervously.

“We must go, my queen, Texas is waiting for you,” Andre said, cutting into their conversation and taking her by the elbow.

Sophie-Anne smiled. “So much to do. There’s never a dull moment. I’m simply overwhelmed with the tasks I have ahead of me. I will find you when I have a spare minute!”

Sookie cleared her throat. “I can bring him up to speed, if you like.”

“Would you? That would save me so much time.” The queen disappeared out into the hall, her staff following her, leaving Eric and Sookie with the dark-haired vampire she had danced with the night before.

“Bring me up to speed?” he asked.

“On the queen’s plans to wed Texas,” she replied coolly. “We should discuss the matter in private. I’d hate to be interrupted. There’s a lot to go over.” She lifted a stack of paperwork off the desk and clutched it to her chest. “I’ll see you downstairs, Rasul.”

The vampire nodded to her and glared at Eric. He had heard of Rasul before, but never formed his own opinion until right then. He immediately disliked him and fought the urge to stake him.

She started the journey down to the elevator. Eric followed, keeping his distance. She pushed the button for the seventh floor.

He smothered a smile. She read my note. When the doors slid open, he pointed down the hall toward his room and hoped that Pam had already left. He sighed with relief when he stepped inside. Sookie strolled over to the table, put the papers down, and then turned to face him.

She walked over to him and, without a word, began unbuttoning her shirt. It fluttered to the floor. She smiled, for the first time since their encounter the previous night. Next, she unzipped her skirt, stepping out of it as she finished her short journey to him. Her bra and panties fell at their feet.

“Anyway,” she went on, oblivious to his efforts, “our state would benefit from a marriage, and so I suggested Texas. I’ve always liked Stan.” She twisted and picked up one of the folders, showing him the first page of a thick legal document. “Last night, before anyone could do or say anything to stop us, we set up the whole thing.” She laughed. “And when I say we I really mean Mr. Cataliades. He’s the queen’s attorney.”

“I know Desmond,” Eric said, spreading his fingers across her ass and kneading her warm flesh.

“I can’t wait to see the look on Arkansas’ face when he finds out the queen is already taken.” Her eyes glittered. “That’s why she wanted to see you, to officiate their wedding.”

Sookie shook her head. “Nope.” A hint of lust flashed across her face. “And she’s not going to.
