Eighteen-year old Sookie, and her cousin Hadley, move to the bright lights and big city of New Orleans. After a rough start, Sookie is determined to make the most of this chance – even after Hadley moves on to bigger and better things and drags Sookie along. Somewhat horrified but also exhilarated, Sookie meets her first vampires and quickly decides to work for them.
As the years go by, Sookie adjusts to her new life, her confidence growing along with the ability to control her telepathy. She also learns to remain unattached to the men (humans and vampires) she allows into her life – she uses and loses them, which serves her well as she has neither the time nor the inclination for romantic complications.
As the Rhodes Summit approaches she prepares for the conference with a clear head. And then she meets Eric.
